Most anyone you talk to will tell you that puppies get their first shot at 8 weeks of age. Solo-Jec 5 Plus Dog Vaccine is what I use and can be bought over the counter in pet supply stores. You can even order the shots online through the link in this post. The next shot will be given at 11 weeks of age, and the final vaccination is to be given at the 13 week mark. This information was acquired directly from the manufactures website.

I have been told so many different stories about when and how many shots to administer my dog. Due the differing information, I always go to the manufacturer for my information and I suggest that you do the same. When you follow the directions from the manufacturer you insure that you use the vaccinations as they were designed.

Your puppy will need several shots and most people do not even know what they are protecting their dogs for. At the minimum you will want to give a 5 way vaccination so lets talk a little bit about that. A 5 way dog shot is designed to protect for 5 different diseases.

  1. canine distemper: usually starts with several common signs including fever, cough, eye and nasal discharge.
  2. adenovirus type 2: This disease typically runs its course without longterm effects but, it can lead to a more serious infection so it is better to get it taken care of.
  3. parainfluenza: A persistent dry, hacking cough, fever/high temp, runny nose, and sneezing, weepy eyes, and loss of appetite.
  4. parvovirus: vomiting, fever, diarrhea, the dog losses energy and petite. Parvo is 91% fatal if not treated.
  5. hepatitis: depression, loss of appetite, fever, coughing, and a tender tummy. This is a failure of the liver so also look for vomiting and jaundice.

There has always been confusion on have many shots are required, due to the differences in opinion. I give a total of 3 shots, but I still highly recommend going with what ever the manufacture tells you. Following the directions will insure that you use the vaccinations to their design. As a matter of fact most manufacturers will even take you phone call and answer you questions. At least that was my experience last time I needed an answer.

We have made it clear that you need to vaccinate your dog. Now you need to decide how you will get this done. You could got to a vet, or all kinds of clinic offer this service. You can find the clinics on some pet stores or at humane societies. The other option is to give the shot yourself, it is not as hard as you might think.
